Will Drifting Ever Be The Same?

Will Tokyo Drift change drifting as we knew it before the movie?

While nobody knows exactly where drifting will go as the result of this movie, every company in the automotive industry has their eyes glued to it, watching to see whether it’s a fad or the next NASCAR---a question I have consistently posed to professional drifters for the last two years during interviews for HSPN Networks, an automotive enthusiast site.

Why?  First, an estimated 80% of the drifting audience is in the much-sought-after 16-29 age group which is an attractive market segment for virtually any type of sponsor, not just those associated with the automotive industry.  In fact, energy drink companies, Red Bull and Rockstar, are currently title sponsors for professional drift drivers, paying big money for the exposure that such opportunities offer.  It will not be long after drifting goes mainstream that more automotive and non-automotive related companies do the same.

Second, drifting as a motor sport has grown by leaps and bounds in the US since the first professional competition was held here just a few years ago.  Both Formula D and D1 Grand Prix have expanded the number of drift exhibitions held around the country and Formula D expanded their schedule so that it now oversees a seven-event schedule throughout the entire US.  When I asked Jim Liaw of Formula D what he has noticed most as an insider of the drifting motor sport in the last two years, he told me that the drivers are more professional, that sponsors are spending more money, and that drifting events are attracting larger and larger audiences.

It is inevitble that there will be people who ruin the art for others -- this is no question.
Honestly, **** all of you who think this movie was anything but trouble and thanks a lot for ruining this beautiful underground artform for the sake of greed, fame, etc. The mountains belong to only those who enjoy driving for it's purest form and should remain intact for ONLY those who are dedicated and are willing to risk the consequences that come with pushing their vehicles to the edge of the envelope. You ****in corporate pigs. Get off us. I will tell you straight up there are many people up here that are better than the pros but never go career cuz of the ****ed up politics behind what should be for joy. NOw, you all go **** yourselves, losers and posers. You have no place in our world -- get the **** out or we will make you -- this is not a threat, its a promise.

I think this article is very good. I am 16 and after i saw the movie, it did make me want to go out and drift. I know that drifting is illegal on the streets so when I graduate from hihgschool i will attempt to become a pro drifter.

I liked the movie, and I think it will open doors for the drifting world, it will never be the same again, but it just could get better. Drifting on the streets would be a lot harder than bracket racing, it's far too much road to clear. It just might bring more kids to the track just to avoid all the hassels of street drifting.

Tokyo Drift was terrible, like its predecessors. I can't believe that even with the mainstream status of imports and tuning, there are people who would watch such a film and either not already know about drifting or be inspired to learn more about it. This movie inspires nothing. Especially to those who are already fans of the drifting sport, this film is less than inspirational. It is a disgrace. Please, please, do not watch this movie to get an idea of what drifting is like. If you enter the drifting world and talk about how awesome this movie was and how it got you into the sport, someone just might bitch slap you. Well, I hope so, anyhow.

first of all i feel that not only fast and the furious was a complete low blow to the whole sport of drifting but that dusche bag called Bow Wow made it worse. look it would be cool to go pro dont get me wrong but now all these kids think there instant pros just because they saw the movie. more than 1/2 prob dont know shit about what goes behind drifting. and the kid that said he was 16 and wouldnt drift on the street should grown some ing balls. how do u think u can be pro whne u are to much of a pussy to drift on the street. you. this is a great example of what im talking about. fast and the furious. drifting is gonna become a whole lot drifferent now.

im agree that this movie, just like all the other f&f movie's, are gonna change the racing scene. and i am glad people share them same opinon about the movie as me..but some of u people need to calm down. i know for a fact that some kid's are gonna see this movie and walk out of the theater and try drifting in the parking lot, but what kid wouldn't? i mean, that's why people make these movie's, because they know they can make lot's of money off kid's because thier easily influenced. but think of the positive aspects the movie will bring to the sport. if anything the movie will make the drift scene much more popular and bring more money to the sport. beside's, what do u people care what kind of attention the movie bring's to the sport if u drift legally?

The movie was shit apart from the vielside RX7 whihc is stunnin and the lead girl who was also stunnin, but i think it will only bring alot of publicty to pro-drifting! As long as people stay true to the underground then only pro driftin should gain status. I have an AE86 corolla n drift when ever i get the chance, most kids will see the movie n like it for a while untill something new comes along. Driftin isnt about money, but enjoyment!

Hey Whats Up Guyz.. I saw the movie four times already and its better everytime and I think the drifting world will increase from it big time. Now it's out into the public for everyone to see if you don't get to go to the track and see it first hand. Drift is here for a very long time in the US!!!

Well i have to say the movie did ruin it for alot of people, ive had my 240sx for the longest time and i've been drifting for a couple years., of coarse just like street racing nothing is going to stay underground for long, the back of my car has the i love drifting sticker on it and people now know what it means, i miss the times when i got the chance to explain it......tokyo drift definatly outdid themselves, and its a shame that a passion and hobby that takes skill, presition, and quick wits, went public!!! now i have a kid in a honda down the street saying its possible to drift frontwheel drive cars..........

For good or for bad, drifting may never be the same. The official release of the film The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift in theaters today will expose drifting to the masses. Just as the original The Fast and The Furious movie made the Japanese car culture widely popular among teenagers and young adults, the Tokyo Drift film will do the same for Drifting, but on a much larger scale.

the awnser to this is it will not be the same, because every young rev head out there will think they can drift, which this isnt the way, drifting requires alot of skill, you need to know how your car handles, not as easy as 1,2,3 walla!, why, i wish the movie didnt happen and drifting was how it was!

What's up my names Rico. I found out about drifting about a year before this movie came out on a website called streetfire.com or some shit like that when I watched a drifting video. I think the sport regardless of weather or not a movie would have been made would of elavated itself eventually. Just the thought of being out of control is such an adrenaline rush that people would have heard and wanted to try. Who ever said this video was created for money so for those of you who think it was for that purpose are stupid. It was clearly to open up a new world and to broden the world of drifting. Less not kid ourselves people are going to drift, and race regardless weather it's legal or not on the streets so why even have a little bitch fit over it online. I think the movie was good maybe not an exact visual of underground drifting but I think it was a good idea for them to make a movie about drift. All that will happen now is competition will become more fierce, challenging, and enjoyable.
