Drift.com covering D1 Grand Prix

D1 Grand Prix is a sport, which is judged, based on who has the coolest and radical drifting performance style.  Drifting is a way of driving that force the rear tires and/or all 4 tires slide while controlling the pass of forward motion.  The steering wheel is turning to the same side of the sliding direction, and drivers are to control the vehicle in extreme speed, often exceeding 120mph, and driving conditions.

Drifting is an extremely difficult driving style that requires high level of skills and techniques.  It?s very amusing to watch each driver?s performance as well.  In addition, unlike Rally and other motor sports, the determination of winner/loser is largely based on driver's skill instead of the machine advantages.  D1 Grand Prix is all about the rivalry of each driver?s drifting skill.

This event is on August 31, 2006.

In what will amount to a tire-smoking, sideways battle between drivers from two vastly different motorsports disciplines, Team Mopar's Samuel Hubinette, along with some of the hottest names in the D1 Professional Drift Grand Prix Series, will take on Dodge Motorsports Kasey Kahne, Bill Elliott and several of their NASCAR friends in the Mopar D1 All-Star Duel presented by ShiftIntoGear. This event is the first ever DRIFTING exhibition pitting D1 PROFESSIONAL DRIFTERS and NASCAR Nextel Cup stars in head-to-head & TO THE DEATH, DRIFT battle.

The Mopar D1 All-Star Duel presented by ShiftIntoGear is slated for August 31 at California'S Irwindale Speedway, known as the House of Drift, and ALSO the site of the first U.S. D1 GRAND PRIX drift event in 2003. The sport of drifting, ORIGINATING in Japan, is a judged competition. Judges take into account the DRIVER technique, style and flair with which contestants slide their cars around specially-configured tracks at speeds up to 130 miles per hour, all the while billowing great clouds of tire smoke.

This exhibition event pits eight headliners from America's most recognized form of racing, the Nextel Cup stock car series, against an equal number of D1 professional drifters. It will also include an autograph session featuring all participating NASCAR and drifting stars. Proceeds from the event, a natural lead-in to that weekend NASCAR Nextel Cup race at the nearby California Speedway in Fontana, will benefit the Kasey Kahne Foundation, which raises and donates funds to charitable organizations that care for chronically ill children and their families.
